Forbes names paying yourself first as THE habit to boost wealth. In other words, you wanna make a deposit into your nest egg before handing over one red hot cent to anything or anyone. Let’s apply this simple theory to the wealth that has nothing to do with money: self care.
Do you give yourself the first of anything?
If you’re like most of my clients you will have experienced putting yourself first about as many times as my beloved wiener dog-Derek-has correctly explained the theory of relativity. So ya, not so much. Imagine if you built a little nest egg of time and space for yourself each day. What kind of woman, employee, employer, mother, wife, friend, stepmom would you be if you paid yourself first?
Sisters, our cups aren’t just empty, they’re leaking. It’s not super shocking that so many of us turn to food and or wine and or shopping to “treat” ourselves at the end of a stressful day. I say that extreme self care is the greatest treat we can give ourselves, and our loved ones.
You’ve likely noticed that the most wonderful time of the year-when the kiddies go back to school-is just around the corner. This is perfect timing to start one tiny habit that I know will have huge impact.
Pay yourself first by taking time for yourself first thing in the morning. Build your nest egg before you look after anyone else’s.
I know your mornings are already super full: you gotta do lunches, get your kids dressed, dress yourself, feed the dog, wipe up that spilled milk and check your Instagram feed. I get it. But I implore you, as I do all of my clients: look at how you’re spending your mornings. After all, they set the tone for our day.
Can you start by paying yourself 10 minutes?
I do a lot of stuff in the morning before anyone wakes up because I have the luxury of working from home and I like waking up early. However, if I only had 10 minutes to spend on myself in the morning, I would for sure spend it journaling. I know at first glance it sounds odious, but it really can be quite delightful. Here are some basic instructions:
-buy a journal
-grab a pen
-set a timer for 10 minutes
-write whatever comes to mind
For those of us with binge and emotional eating tendencies, you will be amazed at how paying yourself first can lead to a decrease in those urges to turn to food. Will writing in a journal for 10 minutes a day solve all your weight and food issues? Probably not, but it will be one small step. And small steps are the golden ticket. My work is about helping women turn to themselves and away from food. It’s hard to break habitual food compulsions with a balance of -$1000 in our nest eggs.
So, this is your challenge. 10 minutes. You can do it. Start tomorrow.
